How to Cancel Dropbox Sign Subscription and Switch to Flat-Rate E-Signature Software
October 13, 2026
Need to get a document signed?
Upload a PDF, add your signers, and send it in minutes with SignSend.
To cancel a Dropbox Sign subscription, log in to Dropbox Sign, click your avatar in the top right, select Settings, open the Billing tab and click Cancel plan. You get a confirmation email, the plan stays active until the end of the period you paid for, and then the account drops to the free version, where you can still log in and open your signed documents.
Two things catch people. Dropbox Sign does not refund anything, so cancelling one day after an annual renewal costs you the whole year. And deleting the account is a separate, irreversible step that wipes every document and signature on it. This guide covers the exact steps, the timing that decides whether you are charged again, what to download first, and what the same signing workflow costs elsewhere if you still need it.

How do I cancel my Dropbox Sign subscription?
Cancel online from the account that pays for the plan. On a team account, an admin has to do it.
- Log in to Dropbox Sign (the product that used to be HelloSign) in a browser.
- Click your avatar, your profile picture or initials, in the top right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Click the Billing tab at the top of the page.
- Click Cancel plan and confirm.
- Keep the email that says your subscription has been successfully canceled. It is your proof if a renewal charge appears later.
If the Billing tab or the Cancel plan button is missing, you are almost always signed in as a team member rather than the admin, or you are signed in to a different Dropbox Sign account from the one on the card statement. Ask your admin to cancel, or check which email address the receipts go to and sign in with that one.
How to unsubscribe from Dropbox Sign by mail
Dropbox also accepts cancellation by post. Use its template letter or write your own with your name, the account email, the full name on the card, the card's last four digits, its expiry date, the billing postcode, the amount charged and the charge date. Customers in the US, Canada and Mexico mail it to Dropbox at P.O. Box 77767, San Francisco, CA 94107.
Dropbox warns that postal requests take longer to process, and if your plan renews before the letter is handled, that charge will not be refunded. Use the post only if you cannot get into the account at all.
When should you cancel Dropbox Sign to avoid the next charge?
Cancel before the renewal date. That single date decides everything, because Dropbox Sign's policy is that subscriptions and fees are non-refundable and cannot be credited, unless the law requires it. If you cancel after the renewal date has passed, the subscription stays active until the end of the next billing period and you have paid for it.
| When you cancel | What happens to the plan | What you pay |
|---|---|---|
| During the 30 day free trial | Account moves to the free plan when the trial ends | Nothing |
| Mid-period on a monthly plan | Paid features run to the end of the month | The current month, no refund |
| Mid-period on an annual plan | Paid features run to the end of the year you paid for | The full year, no refund of unused months |
| The day after renewal | Plan runs to the end of the new period | The new period in full |
| By post, renewal hits first | Plan renews before the letter is processed | The renewal, not refunded |
The practical rule: cancel as soon as you know you are leaving. You lose nothing by doing it early, because you keep paid access to the end of the period anyway, and you remove the risk of forgetting the date.
Can I get a refund from Dropbox Sign?
Usually not. Dropbox's help center says Dropbox Sign subscriptions and fees are non-refundable and cannot be credited, unless required by law, and that Dropbox Sign accounts are not eligible for refunds. That is stricter than some rivals: signNow, for example, takes refund requests from new customers within 30 days of the invoice.
If you were charged after a cancellation you can prove, the confirmation email is what to send support. If you were charged for a renewal you simply forgot, the policy gives you no route back, which is why the timing section above matters more than anything else on this page.
What happens when you cancel Dropbox Sign?
You keep the paid plan until the end of the current billing period. After that the account becomes a free Dropbox Sign account. You can still log in and open the documents that were signed, but the paid features stop and the free version's limits apply to anything you send from then on.
Dropbox's cancellation article does not say what happens to templates beyond the free limits, so treat them as at risk. Before the period ends:
- Download every signed PDF you may need for a dispute, an audit or a renewal. Signed agreements are records, not files you want sitting in an account you no longer pay for.
- Save the audit trail for each one, the record of who signed, when and from where.
- Export or rebuild your templates, the documents you send most often with fields already placed.
- Note any requests still out for signature. Chase them before the plan ends, or resend them from whatever you move to.
If most of what you signed were leases, this is also a good moment to get the key terms out of them. A lease abstraction tool turns each commercial lease PDF into a structured summary of rent, dates and options, which is far easier to keep than a folder of signed files.
How to delete Dropbox Sign account
Deleting is not the same as cancelling, and you cannot do it while a subscription is active: Dropbox Sign asks you to cancel first. Then log in, click your avatar, select Settings, open the Profile tab, scroll to the bottom, click Delete my account and confirm with I understand. Delete my account.
The warning is literal. Deletion is irreversible and permanently removes all data, documents and signatures on the account, and Dropbox will not delete an account on your behalf. If you only want to stop paying, cancel and leave the free account in place, at least until you have downloaded everything above.
What Dropbox Sign costs against a flat plan
Most people cancelling Dropbox Sign still need to send documents for signature. They are leaving because of the seat structure, not the signing. Dropbox Sign Essentials is a single-user plan, about $15 a month billed yearly, with 5 templates. The day a second person needs to send, you move to Standard at $25 per user per month billed yearly, with 15 templates and a minimum of two seats.
| People sending | Dropbox Sign, billed yearly | SignSend, billed yearly |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Essentials, about $180 a year | Pro, $288 a year |
| 2 | Standard, 2 seats, $600 a year | Pro, $288 a year |
| 3 | Standard, 3 seats, $900 a year | Pro, $288 a year |
| 4 | Standard, 4 seats, $1,200 a year (5 or more users is a sales quote) | Business, $588 a year |
For one person, Dropbox Sign Essentials is cheaper and it is a good product, so if price is your only reason for leaving and you work alone, stay on Essentials rather than switching. Past one sender the order flips. SignSend Pro covers up to 3 people on one account with unlimited documents and unlimited signers for $49 a month or $288 a year, and Business covers up to 10 people and adds bulk send to a pasted list for $99 a month or $588 a year. Templates, reminders, signing order and a full audit trail with a certificate of completion are on both. Prices for Dropbox Sign are from its US pricing page; check them before you decide, because they change.
Your first SignSend document is free, so you can send one real agreement end to end before your Dropbox Sign period runs out. The Dropbox Sign alternative page compares the two in detail, the Dropbox Sign pricing breakdown covers every plan and template limit, and the e-signature pricing comparison puts both next to DocuSign, signNow and PandaDoc.
Dropbox Sign cancellation questions
Why can't I cancel my Dropbox Sign plan?
You are most likely signed in as a team member and not the admin, or to a different account from the one being charged. Only an admin on a team account can cancel. If you cannot get into the paying account at all, use the postal route and send the letter well before the renewal date.
Is HelloSign the same as Dropbox Sign?
Yes. HelloSign was renamed Dropbox Sign after Dropbox bought it, and an old HelloSign subscription is cancelled the same way, from Settings and the Billing tab in Dropbox Sign.
Does cancelling Dropbox Sign delete my documents?
No. Cancelling moves the account to the free version at the end of the period and you can still log in to open signed documents. Only deleting the account removes them, permanently.
Does Dropbox Sign charge a cancellation fee?
There is no cancellation fee. What costs money is timing: there are no refunds, so cancelling after a renewal means paying for the whole new period.
Is there a cheaper Dropbox Sign alternative for a small team?
For two or more people, yes. Dropbox Sign Standard is $600 a year for its two-seat minimum. SignSend Pro is $288 a year for up to 3 people with unlimited documents, and our signNow cancellation guide covers the other common switch if you are weighing signNow as well.
