DocuSign is free if you are the one signing, and not free if you are the one sending. Signing a document someone sends you costs nothing, lasts forever, and does not require an account at all. A free DocuSign account also lets you upload and self sign an unlimited number of your own documents. But if you want other people to sign, a free account caps you at three documents in total, and after that the cheapest paid plan is Personal at $11 a month.

That split is the whole answer, and it is the part most articles blur. DocuSign's own signer page states it plainly: electronic signing with eSignature is always free, and if the document was sent via DocuSign you do not need an account to sign it. The moment you become the sender rather than the recipient, you are a customer.

Is DocuSign free to use?

It depends entirely on which side of the envelope you are on. As a signer, yes, permanently and with no account required. As a sender, only for your first three documents, after which you need a paid subscription starting at $11 per month for the Personal plan.

This catches people out because the first DocuSign experience almost everyone has is receiving something. A landlord sends a lease, an employer sends an offer letter, a bank sends a disclosure. You click, you sign, you never see a payment screen, and you reasonably conclude the product is free. Then you try to send your own contract and discover the meter.

Does DocuSign have a free version?

There is a free account, but it is a signer account rather than a free sending plan. It lasts indefinitely, stores your signed documents, and lets you upload and sign your own files without limit. Is DocuSign free for signers?

Yes, always, and this is worth stating clearly because it removes a common objection. If you send someone a document through DocuSign, that person pays nothing, signs nothing up for, and in most cases does not create an account. They click the link in the email, sign, and the completed file comes back to you.

The same is true of essentially every reputable e-signature tool, including this one. Nobody in this market charges the recipient. When a vendor quotes a per user price, the users being counted are the people who initiate documents, not the people who sign them. If you are worried that asking a client to sign electronically will cost them something or force them into a subscription, it will not.

Is DocuSign free for personal use?

For personal signing, yes. If you are an individual who mostly receives documents to sign, a rental application, a school form, a car purchase, a tax authorisation, the free account covers you indefinitely and costs nothing.

Personal use in the sense of sending is where it stops being free. A private landlord with two properties who sends four leases a year, a person selling a car who wants a signed bill of sale, a freelancer sending an occasional contract: all of those are sending, and after three documents the free account will not do it. How many documents can you send with a free DocuSign account?

Three. DocuSign's signer page states it directly: you can sign and send back an unlimited number of documents for free, but if you are collecting signatures you can only send three documents with a free DocuSign account.

Note that this is a total, not a monthly allowance. It does not reset. Once those three are used, the free account no longer sends for signature at all. That makes it a trial of the feature rather than a usable free tier, which is a meaningful distinction if you are choosing a tool for a business that sends a handful of documents a month rather than a handful a year.

Does DocuSign have a free trial?

Yes. DocuSign offers a free premium trial for people who want to send documents and collect signatures, which is separate from the permanently free signer account. DocuSign does not state the trial length on its free account page, so confirm it at signup rather than relying on figures quoted in third party articles, which are frequently out of date.

One practical warning that comes up constantly in support forums: the trial converts. If you sign up with a card and do not cancel, you get billed. Is DocuSign free for nonprofits?

Not in the published self serve catalogue. There is no free nonprofit tier listed alongside Personal, Standard, and Business Pro. DocuSign has run discounted programs for nonprofit organisations, and the terms of those change, so a nonprofit should ask DocuSign sales directly rather than assume either a free plan or a fixed discount exists.

Worth knowing when you make that call: nonprofit pricing in this market is usually a percentage off the standard per seat rate, not a change to the envelope allowance. If your organisation's problem is that 100 envelopes per user per year is not enough for your volunteer agreements and donor acknowledgements, a discount on the seat price does not fix it. Price the discounted total against a tool that does not cap sends before you commit.

Is DocuSign free for realtors?

Not directly, but check with your brokerage before you buy anything. Real estate is one of DocuSign's largest verticals and it sells separate real estate plans, and many brokerages and professional associations bundle an e-signature account into membership or into their transaction management platform. Agents quite regularly pay for a personal DocuSign subscription while already having access through their brokerage.

If you do end up buying your own, the volume question decides the plan. Personal's five envelopes a month does not survive a busy month of listing agreements, disclosures, and addenda, which is why agents outgrow it faster than almost any other profession.

What does DocuSign cost once the free options run out?

The published US self serve plans, last confirmed on July 16, 2026, are Personal at $11 per user per month, Standard at $30 per user per month, and Business Pro at $45 per user per month, all billed annually. Above those sits an Enhanced tier quoted by sales with custom envelope limits.

The number that surprises people is not the monthly price, it is the annual commitment plus the cap. Personal is $132 a year for 60 envelopes. This is also the point where an honest look at total software spend pays for itself. E-signature is rarely a large line item on its own, but it is exactly the kind of subscription that gets bought once for a single deal, renews annually, and never gets reviewed again. The same audit that catches a forgotten seat here usually finds several more across the rest of your SaaS and cloud spend, and e-signature is a good place to start because the usage data is easy to check: count how many documents you actually sent last year.

Can you downgrade to a free DocuSign plan?

You can cancel a paid plan and keep a free account for signing and storage, but you cannot downgrade into a free sending plan, because there is not one. After cancellation you retain the ability to sign documents and access what you have already signed. You lose the ability to send new documents for signature.

Check what happens to your stored documents and templates before you cancel, and export anything you need to keep. Losing access to a completed agreement at the moment a dispute starts is a genuinely expensive mistake, and it is avoidable with ten minutes of downloading.

What to do with this

If you only ever sign things, stop worrying about cost. DocuSign is free for you and will stay free, and you do not need an account unless you want your signed documents stored in one place.

If you send things, the real question is not whether DocuSign is free but how many documents you send in a year. Under about 60, sent by one person, Personal is defensible at $132. Above that, or across more than one sender, the per seat model starts charging you for headcount rather than work, and it is worth putting the annual total next to a couple of alternatives before you renew.
