Change DocuSign Signature: How to Change or Edit Signature in DocuSign
August 16, 2026
Need to get a document signed?
Upload a PDF, add your signers, and send it in minutes with SignSend.
To change your signature in DocuSign, open your account, select your user icon and choose Manage Profile, then Signatures. Use Actions and Delete to remove the saved signature, then select ADD SIGNATURE to create a new one. You can also change it mid-signature by selecting the adopted signature inside the document and choosing Change, but that option is hidden in several common situations, which is why so many people conclude it cannot be done at all.
The steps below were read from DocuSign's own help documentation in August 2026. The important part is not the click path, it is knowing in advance which route will work for you, because the wrong one wastes an afternoon on a contract somebody is waiting for.
How to change your signature in DocuSign
This is the reliable route and it works whether or not you are in the middle of signing anything.
- From your DocuSign account, select your user icon in the top right corner, then select Manage Profile.
- Select Signatures from the left menu.
- Select Actions > Delete to remove the existing signature, or go straight to ADD SIGNATURE to create an additional one.
- Enter your name and initials exactly as you want them to appear, then choose one of CHOOSE (a preformatted style), DRAW (freehand) or UPLOAD (an image file of your own signature).
- Select CREATE to save the new signature and initial style.
One detail catches people out. The preformatted styles are generated from the text in the name and initials boxes, so the gallery you see for John Smith is not the gallery you see for John A Smith. Get the name text right before you start picking a style, otherwise you will be back here in a week.
How to change signature in DocuSign while signing
Navigate to the document you are signing, select the adopted signature in the document, and select Change. That is the whole procedure when it is available.
Before you have committed, there is an easier version: while the adopt window is still open, you can switch tabs between CHOOSE, DRAW and UPLOAD, and the DRAW tab has a Clear control so you can redraw as many times as you like. Nothing is saved until you confirm. Getting it right at that point avoids every complication in the rest of this article.
How to change signature on DocuSign without an account
You generally cannot change an adopted signature after the fact without an active DocuSign account. DocuSign lists not having an active account as one of the reasons the Change option does not appear. Signing itself never requires an account, which is why so many people hit this: they signed as a guest, adopted a style in a hurry, and then found there was nothing to click.
There are two practical answers. If you have not finished signing yet, clear and redo the signature in the adopt window before you complete the envelope. If you have already finished, the signature is part of a completed record and you cannot restyle it yourself. Ask the sender to void the envelope and send a fresh one. Voiding requires a reason that the recipients can see, and it cannot be undone, so it is worth being specific about why in the message to the sender.
When the Change option is and is not available
DocuSign documents the specific circumstances in which you will not see the option. Collected in one place, they explain almost every complaint about a DocuSign signature that will not change.
| Your situation | Can you change it in the document? | The route that works |
|---|---|---|
| Active DocuSign account, signing in a browser | Yes | Select the signature, then Change. Or edit it in Manage Profile |
| No DocuSign account | No | Redraw before you finish signing. Afterwards, ask the sender to void and resend |
| Signing in the DocuSign mobile app | No | Open the link in a desktop browser instead |
| In Person Signing session | No | Ask the host to restart the session |
| Digital or Universal Signatures (CFR Part 11 and similar) | No | The signature is bound to a certificate and cannot be restyled |
| Sign and Return | No | Ask the sender for a standard envelope |
| Sender locked the recipient names | No | Ask the sender to unlock the name and resend |
In five of those seven rows there is no fix on the signer's side at all. That is not a bug. Certificate-based digital signatures, for example, are cryptographically bound to the signer's certificate, so restyling the visible image after the fact would undermine the thing that makes them trustworthy.
How to change your adopted signature after signing
Editing your saved signature does not change documents you have already signed, and this surprises people every time. Completed envelopes keep the signature that was applied at the moment of signing. That is correct behaviour for a legal record: if updating your profile silently restyled every contract you had ever signed, the audit trail would be worth very little.
So if the wrong signature is sitting on a completed document, the document has to be redone. While an envelope is still in process the sender can use Correct to make changes; once it is completed or voided, Correct is no longer available and a new envelope is the only route.
How to change the name on your DocuSign signature
The name and the signature are the same setting. Go to Manage Profile, then Signatures, delete the existing signature, add a new one, and type the name and initials the way you want them. Because every preformatted style is rendered from that text, changing the name necessarily regenerates the style options.
If a sender locked the recipient names on a particular envelope, you will not be able to adjust the name for that document at all. That is a sender-side setting, usually applied when the legal name on the contract has to match a record exactly, and only the sender can lift it.
How to change your DocuSign signature on your phone
Signing through the DocuSign mobile app is one of the situations where the in-document Change option does not appear. If the style matters, open the signing link in a mobile or desktop browser instead of the app, or set the signature up in Manage Profile first so the app picks up the version you want.
Worth knowing in the other direction: a phone or tablet is the best hardware for the DRAW option. DocuSign notes that freehand drawing works best with a stylus, and a finger on a touchscreen produces a far more natural signature than a mouse ever will. Plenty of people set their signature up on a tablet precisely for that reason and then use it everywhere.
Why is my DocuSign signature not changing?
Work through these in order and one of them will be the answer.
- You edited the profile signature but are looking at an old document. Already-signed envelopes keep the original. Check a new one.
- You are in one of the situations in the table above. Mobile app, in-person signing, certificate-based signatures, Sign and Return, locked names, or no account.
- You added a signature instead of replacing one. DocuSign lets you save more than one signature, so adding a second leaves the original in place. Delete the one you do not want.
- It changed, but it renders small. An uploaded image with wide white margins gets scaled down until the ink looks tiny. Crop tight to the ink and upload again.
Can you edit a DocuSign document after signing?
No. Once an envelope is completed, its contents are fixed. That is the point of a tamper-evident record, and it is what makes the audit trail meaningful if the agreement is ever disputed. The sender's Correct tool only works while an envelope is still in process, and it cannot touch documents that are completed or voided.
If something is genuinely wrong on a completed document, the answer is a new document: an amendment, a corrected agreement, or a fresh envelope that supersedes the first. Teams that sign a lot of contracts usually end up needing to pull the key terms out of scanned agreements for exactly this reason, because finding which version of which contract is current is harder than signing it was.
How to change the signer on a DocuSign envelope
Changing who signs is a different job from changing how a signature looks. DocuSign supports reassigning an envelope to a different recipient, but whether you can do it depends on permissions the sending account controls, so the reliable answer is to ask the sender. From the sender's side, an envelope that is still in process can be corrected, which includes recipient changes; an envelope that has completed cannot.
Getting the signature right the first time
Almost everything above exists because signatures get adopted under time pressure, inside a document somebody else sent. Ten minutes in Manage Profile, before any of that, removes the whole problem: fix the name text, pick between a preformatted style and a drawn one, and if you are uploading a scan, crop it tight.
If you are the one sending documents rather than signing them, the calculation is different. Signing on DocuSign is free and always has been. Sending for signature is the metered activity, and that is where the cost decisions actually live.
SignSend takes a simpler line for low-volume senders: upload the document, add your signers, send it, and the signer draws or types a signature and returns it with an audit trail attached, no account required on their side. Being straight about it, SignSend ships a free plan covering 3 documents a month and up to 2 signers, plus Pro at $12 a month and Business at $29 a month with bulk send, and there are no reusable templates. If you need those, our comparison pages say plainly which vendor to look at.
