How to Delete a DocuSign Account and Cancel Your Plan

To delete a DocuSign account, log in as an Administrator, go to Admin, then Plan and Billing under ACCOUNT, open Manage Subscription, select Switch Plan, and choose Close Account at the bottom of the page. Confirm on the review screen and the account, your profile information and all of your documents are permanently deleted. That is a different action from cancelling, which only ends the paid plan and drops you to a free account with your documents intact. Download everything you need first, because closed accounts cannot be reopened.

Cancel, close, or remove a user: which one do you actually want?

Three different things get called "deleting DocuSign," and picking the wrong one is how people lose signed agreements they still needed. This is the difference in one table.

If your goal is to stop paying, cancel. If your goal is to be gone from DocuSign entirely, close. Most people who search for how to delete a DocuSign account actually want the first one, and DocuSign itself suggests considering a downgrade to a free account if you want to keep your documents.

How to delete a DocuSign account

Closing the account is the permanent option. You need Administrator access on the account, and you should download your agreements and invoices before you start, because they will not be accessible afterwards.

Log into your DocuSign account as an Administrator.
Select Admin from the top navigation bar.
Select Plan and Billing under ACCOUNT.
Go to Manage Subscription, then Switch Plan.
Select Close Account at the bottom of the page. The button sits under a short description reading "Permanently delete your account, profile information and all documents."
Review the account closure summary and select Close Account again to confirm.

The confirmation screen spells out what you are giving up: all users lose access to the account, the plan and any subscription information, and you lose access to saved agreements and invoices. DocuSign recommends downloading all agreements and invoices before closing. Take that seriously. There is no support path that recovers a closed account's documents.

How long does it take to close a DocuSign account?

DocuSign's mobile instructions state that the account will close in 24 to 48 hours after you confirm. The account is not always gone the moment you click the button, so treat the confirmation as the point of no return rather than the completion. If you realise mid-window that you needed a file, contact support immediately rather than assuming you have time.

How to cancel a DocuSign subscription without deleting the account

This is the safer default and the one most businesses want. Cancelling ends the paid plan at the end of the current term and drops you to a free account, and you keep access to all your documents.

Log into DocuSign as an Administrator.
Select Admin, then Plan and Billing under ACCOUNT.
Select Manage Subscription, then Cancel subscription. On a Real Estate Starter Plan, scroll down and select Manage subscription, then Cancel Plan.
Review the cancellation information and select Confirm Cancellation.
Select Continue to finish.

The cancellation summary tells you the exact date the plan ends, confirms you switch automatically to a free account, and lists what you lose: your monthly envelope sends and access to your invoices. Can you delete a DocuSign account?

Yes, if you are an Administrator on the account. The Close Account option permanently deletes the account along with your profile information and all documents. There is no way to reopen it afterwards, and DocuSign is explicit that a closed account cannot be reactivated. If you later need DocuSign again, you create a new account from scratch, and it is a brand-new account even if you reuse the same email.

How to delete a free DocuSign account

The path is the same. A free DocuSign account is still an account with an admin, so you close it through Admin, then Plan and Billing, then Manage Subscription, then Switch Plan, then Close Account. There is no subscription to cancel first, so the only step is the closure itself.

Worth knowing before you bother: a free DocuSign account has no recurring cost and no expiry. If you are closing it purely to stop charges, there are none. What happens to your documents when you close a DocuSign account

They are deleted. DocuSign describes Close Account as permanently deleting your account, profile information and all documents, and warns that your documents will not be accessible after closing. There is no grace period you can rely on and no self-serve restore.

Download these before you confirm anything:

Every completed agreement, as PDFs, including the certificate of completion, which is the audit trail proving who signed, when, and from which IP address.
In-flight envelopes that are still out for signature. These do not survive closure either, and the signers holding them will simply find the link dead.
Your invoices, which you lose access to on cancellation as well as closure. If those receipts need to reach your books rather than a folder, pulling the line items out of the PDFs automatically beats retyping a year of them.
Templates, if you built any worth rebuilding elsewhere. Export or screenshot the field layouts; there is no portable template format to carry across vendors.

Retention matters here beyond convenience. Many US businesses have record retention obligations that outlive their software choices, and an executed contract you can no longer produce is a problem whether or not the vendor was at fault. Store the signed PDFs and their completion certificates somewhere you control before you close anything.

How to delete a user from a DocuSign account

Different problem, different tool. If someone left the company and you want their seat back, you are removing a member, not closing the account. In DocuSign Rooms for Real Estate this is done from Settings, the MEMBERS tab, then Close Account in the left navigation, and DocuSign requires you to transfer that member's rooms and documents to a new owner first. Anything left in the member's My Docs and Inbox is deleted permanently, so move it before you continue.

One detail that catches admins out: DocuSign states there is no reopen option after closing a member account. If you need that person back, you add them again with a new account. You can reuse the same name or email, but it is a brand-new account with none of the old history attached. For eSignature seats outside Rooms, manage the change from the Users area in Admin, and check your plan's user licence count afterwards, since seat-based plans keep billing for licences you have not actually released.

How to cancel DocuSign if you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play

You cannot cancel it inside DocuSign. If you bought the subscription through the DocuSign mobile app, billing sits with Apple or Google and the cancellation has to happen in your Apple (iTunes) or Google Play subscription settings. DocuSign points you to those platforms directly. Cancelling inside DocuSign will not stop an App Store charge, which is the usual cause of the "I cancelled and still got billed" complaint.

Closing the account itself is still done on the web. DocuSign's mobile guidance is to log in from a browser, select Admin from the hamburger menu, choose Plan and Billing from the Go to menu, and select Close Account.

Should you close the account or just leave it?

If you are leaving DocuSign over cost rather than principle, downgrading beats closing. A free account costs nothing, keeps your signed agreements retrievable, and leaves the door open if a counterparty sends you something through DocuSign later, which they will. Closing makes sense when you have a data reason: an offboarding requirement, a client contract that limits where records live, or a genuine desire to reduce the number of systems holding your executed agreements.

If the reason is that the bill outgrew the usage, it usually pays to understand the metering before you pick a replacement.
