A DocuSign subscription renews automatically on its anniversary date, at the price of the latest equivalent plan and with the same number of seats. That is why a renewal can cost more than the year you signed up for: Standard now lists at $30 per user a month on an annual commitment ($360 a year), up from the $25 that many buyers first paid, which is a 20 percent jump per seat. You can remove seats, change plans or switch billing cycle inside the 60 day window before the renewal date, and a first annual renewal can be refunded within 14 days only if you have not sent anything since it charged.
The renewal rules below come from DocuSign's own renewals and seats FAQs, and the prices from its eSignature pricing page, read on September 30, 2026. If the renewal notice is already in your inbox, the section on lowering the bill is the one to read first.
What does DocuSign renew at?
DocuSign renews your plan at today's list price for the equivalent plan, not at the price you paid last year. The support article on renewals puts it plainly: the subscription renews automatically on your billing anniversary date to the latest equivalent plan. If list prices went up during your term, the renewal picks up the new rate.
| Plan, annual commitment | Rate many accounts first bought at | Current list rate | Current yearly cost | Change per seat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal | $10 a month | $11 a month | $132 | +$12 a year |
| Standard, per user | $25 a month | $30 a month | $360 | +$60 a year |
| Business Pro, per user | $40 a month | $45 a month | $540 | +$60 a year |
For a five seat Standard account that is $300 more at renewal for exactly the same product. The full price list for every plan and both billing cycles is on our DocuSign annual cost page, including the industry, nonprofit and IAM plans.
Why was my DocuSign renewal charge higher than last time?
Usually one of four things: a list price increase, seats added during the year, a plan upgrade, or overage and add-ons on the same invoice. DocuSign's own answer to this question points at the renewal email or contract, where any change to the plan is listed.
Seats are the one people forget. A seat added mid-year is billed pro rata for the months left, so it looked cheap when you added it. At renewal it bills for a full year at the new rate, because the subscription renews with the current number of seats. An account that started with three Standard seats and added two in spring renews at five, which at today's rate is $1,800 rather than the $900 the first invoice showed at $25 a seat.
Overage is the other surprise. Standard and Business Pro seats include 100 envelopes a year on the annual plan. Past that, DocuSign bills $3.00 to $3.60 per envelope on Standard and $4.80 to $5.80 on Business Pro, and those charges appear on invoices during the year rather than at renewal. Our DocuSign cost per envelope breakdown lists every rate.
When can I change my DocuSign plan before it renews?
Inside the renewal window, which opens 60 days before the renewal date. Accounts eligible to manage renewal online receive emails 60 days and 30 days before the date, and see banners in the account from 60 days down to 7 days before. During that window an administrator can open Plan and Billing and remove seats, switch to a different plan, or move from annual to monthly billing for the next term.
Three rules decide what happens next. Plan changes take effect at the renewal date and are not prorated. You cannot add capacity mid-term once you are inside the 60 day window. And if you do not see the renewal options during that window, your account is not eligible for online renewal management and the change has to go through a DocuSign representative. Accounts bought from a sales representative always work that way: changes to contracted seats happen at renewal, and the account cannot be cancelled online.
Put the renewal date in a calendar 60 days out, not on the day itself. Teams that track several vendor contracts often keep them in procurement software that keeps every vendor renewal on one calendar, so the window is opened on purpose instead of by a charge.
How to lower your DocuSign renewal
The cheapest renewal is the one sized to what you actually used last year. Open the account's usage report before the window closes and check two numbers: how many people sent at least one envelope, and how many envelopes the account sent in total. Then work down this list.
| Change at renewal | Saving per year | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Remove seats nobody sends from | $360 per Standard seat, $540 per Business Pro seat | A seat sent zero or a handful of envelopes all year |
| Move from Business Pro to Standard | $180 per seat | You never used bulk send, web forms, payment collection or signer attachments |
| Move a single light user to Personal | $228 against one Standard seat | One person, never more than 5 envelopes a month |
| Switch to the REALTORS plan | $120 per seat against Standard | Real estate agents who are NAR members |
| Keep the annual cycle | $180 per Standard seat against monthly | You are certain you will stay on DocuSign all year |
Two things will not help at renewal. The nonprofit discount is for new customers buying an annual plan, and it excludes upgrades, downgrades and added seats, so an existing account cannot apply it at renewal. And DocuSign does not publish a renewal discount for plans bought online. Contracts negotiated with a sales representative are priced by that contract, so the rep is the person to ask.
If the usage report shows one desk sending most of the documents for several colleagues, the seat math is the problem rather than the plan. Three Standard seats renew at $1,080 and five at $1,800, while a flat account that one login sends from costs the same whatever the volume.
Can I get a refund after DocuSign renews?
Once, and only on a first annual renewal, if you ask within 14 days and have sent no envelopes in the new term. DocuSign's renewals FAQ lists four conditions: the charge is your first annual renewal, the request comes within 14 days of the renewal date, no envelopes were sent during the new term, and you have not used this one-time exception before. You make the request by contacting DocuSign with the invoice and account details.
A brand new annual plan has a separate 30 day refund window that applies to the initial term only. Month to month plans are not refundable at all. Plans bought from a sales representative have no online refund option. If you intend to leave rather than resize, our step by step guide on how to cancel a DocuSign subscription covers each account type and the ten day notice in DocuSign's terms.
When switching at renewal costs less
If one login can send for your office, SignSend Pro at $288 a year costs less than a single DocuSign Standard renewal at $360, with no envelope count. Pro includes unlimited documents and unlimited signers, signing order, deadlines, automatic reminders and a full audit trail and certificate of completion on every signed PDF. Business at $588 a year adds bulk send to up to 200 recipients and your company name on the signing page.
It is not the right switch for everyone, and the honest cases are easy to spot. A sole user under 5 documents a month is cheaper on DocuSign Personal at $132. An agent on the REALTORS plan pays $240. A team whose people each need their own login and permissions, or who rely on DocuSign's integrations and templates, should resize their DocuSign seats rather than move. SignSend does not offer integrations or an API.
For everyone else, the renewal window is the cheapest moment to switch because nothing is lost: the current term runs to its end date, and you can send the first document on SignSend free while DocuSign is still active.
