DocuSign's cost per envelope works out to $2.20 on Personal, $3.60 on Standard and $5.40 on Business Pro when you divide each annual plan's price by the envelopes it includes. Envelopes you send beyond the allowance cost $3.60 each on Standard and $5.80 each on Business Pro, pay as you go, according to DocuSign's own overage FAQ. Paying month to month raises every one of those numbers.
DocuSign does not sell envelopes one at a time. It sells seats, each seat comes with an allowance, and the per envelope price is what you get when you divide one by the other. That is why the figure changes by plan and by billing cycle, and why most pages quoting it are out of date: the widely copied $2.00, $3.00 and $4.80 were correct when the annual plans cost $10, $25 and $40 a month. They cost $11, $30 and $45 now.
How much does DocuSign charge per envelope?
On the annual plans, Personal costs $132 a year for 5 envelopes a month (60 a year), Standard costs $360 per user a year for 100 envelopes, and Business Pro costs $540 per user a year for the same 100. Month to month, Standard and Business Pro switch to an allowance of 10 envelopes per user per month. These are the prices on DocuSign's plans page, read with both billing toggles on September 22, 2026.
| Plan | Billing | Price | Envelopes included | Cost per envelope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal | Annual | $132 a year | 60 a year (5 a month) | $2.20 |
| Personal | Monthly | $15 a month | 5 a month | $3.00 |
| Standard | Annual | $360 per user a year | 100 per user a year | $3.60 |
| Standard | Monthly | $45 per user a month | 10 per user a month | $4.50 |
| Business Pro | Annual | $540 per user a year | 100 per user a year | $5.40 |
| Business Pro | Monthly | $65 per user a month | 10 per user a month | $6.50 |
Two things stand out. First, the price per envelope rises as you climb the tiers, because Business Pro charges $180 more per seat for the same 100 envelopes. What the extra buys is features such as bulk send, web forms and payment collection, which our DocuSign Standard vs Business Pro comparison goes through line by line. Second, the cheapest envelope in the whole lineup is on Personal, but Personal stops at 5 a month and cannot buy more, which is covered in detail on our DocuSign Personal plan page.
How much are additional DocuSign envelopes?
Additional envelopes on Standard cost $3.60 each pay as you go on an annual plan, or $3.00 each if you buy them ahead through Subscribe and Save. On Business Pro they cost $5.80 or $4.80. Monthly plans pay more: $5.40 or $4.50 on Standard, and $7.80 or $6.50 on Business Pro. Personal plans cannot buy extra envelopes at all.
| Plan and billing | Subscribe and Save, per envelope | Pay as you go, per envelope |
|---|---|---|
| Standard, annual | $3.00 | $3.60 |
| Standard, monthly | $4.50 | $5.40 |
| Business Pro, annual | $4.80 | $5.80 |
| Business Pro, monthly | $6.50 | $7.80 |
| Personal | Not available | Not available |
Those figures come from DocuSign's support FAQ on managing envelopes, prices in US dollars before tax. Pay as you go is what happens automatically when you go over: DocuSign keeps sending and bills each extra envelope at the set fee, so the service is not interrupted. Subscribe and Save means raising your allowance on the Plans and Billing page before your next billing date. It saves 60 cents to $1.30 an envelope, but you pay for the block whether you use it or not.
Notice that the Standard annual pay as you go price, $3.60, is exactly the plan's own cost per envelope today. Going over costs you the same per envelope as the envelopes you already bought. Buying ahead at $3.00 is the only way to get them cheaper.
Does DocuSign charge per envelope or per user?
Both. The subscription is priced per user, and each user's seat carries an envelope allowance, so a three person team on Standard pays $1,080 a year for 300 envelopes. When the team runs out, the overage is charged per envelope. There is no pure pay per envelope plan on the eSignature side; the nearest thing is the developer API range, which prices by envelope volume rather than by the number of people sending.
| Developer API plan | Annual price | Envelopes | Cost per envelope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $600 a year | 40 a month (480 a year) | $1.25 |
| Intermediate | $3,600 a year | 100 a month (1,200 a year) | $3.00 |
| Advanced | $5,760 a year | 100 a month (1,200 a year) | $4.80 |
The API plans are built for developers embedding signing into their own software, not for an office sending contracts from a browser, so the $1.25 envelope is only a real option if you have someone to build the integration. The full breakdown is on our DocuSign API pricing page.
What counts as an envelope in DocuSign?
An envelope counts the moment it is sent, whether or not anyone signs it. DocuSign's FAQ is explicit that envelopes sent through Bulk Send and PowerForms count toward the allowance too. One envelope can hold several documents and several signers, so a lease with three tenants is one envelope, but a contract you void and resend after a typo is two.
That last point is where real costs drift above the table. Corrections, resends to a different email address and bulk sends to a full list all draw on the same allowance. If a quarter of your sends end up being redone, your effective cost per signed agreement on Standard is closer to $4.80 than $3.60. The DocuSign limits guide covers the separate file size, page and recipient limits that sit on top of the envelope allowance.
Is it cheaper to pay DocuSign monthly or annually per envelope?
Annually, by a third, but with a catch. Standard costs $4.50 an envelope on monthly billing and $3.60 on annual billing. The monthly plan includes 10 envelopes a month, which is 120 a year, while the annual plan includes 100 a year. So paying annually saves $180 a seat and gives you 20 fewer envelopes. If you send close to the monthly allowance every month, the annual plan runs out in October.
The monthly allowance is also use it or lose it by month, and the annual one is a pool you can draw on whenever the work comes in. A seasonal business, such as a tax practice or a summer camp, usually does better on the annual pool even with fewer envelopes in it.
When is a flat rate plan cheaper than paying per envelope?
A flat rate plan is cheaper once your volume pushes DocuSign's seat plus overage past the flat price. SignSend Pro is $490 a year for the account with unlimited documents and unlimited signers, so its cost per document falls the more you send: $4.90 at 100 documents a year, $2.45 at 200, and 98 cents at 500.
| Documents sent a year, one sender | DocuSign Standard, annual, with overage | SignSend Pro, a year | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 | $360 | $490 | DocuSign |
| 100 | $360 | $490 | DocuSign |
| 136 | $489.60 | $490 | About even |
| 200 | $720 | $490 | SignSend |
| 500 | $1,800 | $490 | SignSend |
The overage column uses DocuSign's $3.60 pay as you go rate. If you buy the extra envelopes ahead at $3.00 the crossover moves to about 143 a year. Either way, the honest reading is that a single person sending under roughly 136 documents a year pays less on DocuSign Standard, and a single person on Personal sending under 60 pays much less. Above that, or from the second DocuSign seat at $720 a year, the flat plan costs less.
SignSend is not the right swap for everyone paying DocuSign. It takes one PDF per send, and it has no integrations with other apps. What you get is upload, add signers, send, with an audit trail and certificate of completion on every document and no counting. If you are tracking what each tool in the stack really costs you a month, it helps to see every software subscription's spend in one place before renewal, because per envelope charges are exactly the kind that creep.
How to lower your DocuSign cost per envelope
- Count your last 12 months of sends in DocuSign's reports before renewal, and size the plan to that number rather than to the tier you started on.
- Buy overage ahead if you know you will exceed the allowance. $3.00 beats $3.60 on Standard.
- Do not upgrade for capacity. Business Pro has the same 100 envelopes as Standard at a higher price per envelope.
- Check the discounts you may qualify for. Registered nonprofits pay $210 instead of $360 for Standard; see our DocuSign nonprofit pricing breakdown for the terms.
- Compare against a flat plan if you consistently send more than about 140 documents a year per sender. Our DocuSign pricing page lays out every plan and both billing cycles.
DocuSign cost per envelope: quick answers
How much is one DocuSign envelope?
On Standard annual, one envelope costs $3.60, which is both the plan's price divided by its 100 envelope allowance and DocuSign's pay as you go overage fee. On Business Pro annual it is $5.40 within the allowance and $5.80 beyond it.
Can I buy more envelopes on DocuSign Personal?
No. DocuSign's overage and Subscribe and Save pricing excludes Personal plans. Once you send 5 envelopes in a month on Personal, you wait for the next month or upgrade to Standard at $360 per user a year.
Do unsigned or voided envelopes count?
Yes. DocuSign counts an envelope once it is sent, whether or not it is signed or completed, so voided and resent envelopes each use up allowance.
Does DocuSign have unlimited envelopes?
Not on the eSignature plans. DocuSign's FAQ points to its IAM Standard and IAM Professional plans for unlimited envelopes, which are priced per user at a higher rate than the eSignature plans.
