SignSend Pro, month to month, unlimited documents
The short answer: Smallpdf is a PDF toolkit, and the signature requests it sells are delivered by Sign.com, a separate product from the same company. Smallpdf Pro costs $15 a month billed monthly or $120 for a year on Smallpdf's US pricing page, and it includes an unlimited Sign.com Premium subscription. The free plan comes with a Sign.com account limited to 2 documents a month.
So the question behind most searches for a Smallpdf alternative is simple: are you paying for thirty PDF tools to use one of them? If you compress, convert and edit PDFs every week, Smallpdf is good value and this page will say so. If your documents arrive finished and the job is getting signatures on them, a dedicated signing tool is the cleaner buy. SignSend Pro is $12 a month, billed month to month, with unlimited documents, unlimited signers, automatic reminders, a full audit trail and a certificate of completion on every finished document.
We will also be straight about the one place Smallpdf's own company beats us. If you only sign and you are happy to pay for a year up front, Sign.com Premium on its own lists at $7 a month billed yearly, which is $84 a year. That is cheaper than Smallpdf Pro and cheaper than SignSend Pro. The table further down shows where each option wins.
How much does Smallpdf cost?
Smallpdf Pro costs $15 a month billed monthly or $120 for a year, which works out to $10 a month. The Team plan is $12 a seat a month billed monthly or $8 a seat a month billed yearly, for 2 to 19 seats. Business, for 20 seats and up, is quoted by sales. There is a Free plan with limited downloads and a Sign.com account capped at 2 documents a month. Our Smallpdf pricing page breaks down every plan, including what a Team of 2 to 19 seats costs.
We read those numbers off Smallpdf's US pricing page twice, once on the Monthly toggle and once on the Yearly toggle, and then checked them against Smallpdf's own App Store listing, which prices a Monthly Plan at $14.99 and a Yearly Plan at $119.99. The two sources agree to the cent once you account for the rounding on the web page.
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly, per month | Cost for the year | Signing included |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smallpdf Free | $0 | $0 | $0 | Sign.com free account, 2 documents a month |
| Smallpdf Pro | $15 | $10 | $120 | Unlimited Sign.com Premium |
| Smallpdf Team, per seat | $12 | $8 | $96 a seat, 2 seat minimum | Sign.com Premium for each member |
| Smallpdf Business | Custom | Custom | Custom, 20 seats and up | Sign.com Premium for each member |
| Sign.com Premium on its own | Not checked | $7 | $84 | Unlimited documents and signees |
| SignSend Pro | $12 | None | $144 | Unlimited documents and signers |
One detail worth knowing before you trust any other write-up. Smallpdf's own Free vs Pro article says the yearly plan is 25% cheaper per month. On the US pricing page the yearly toggle carries a -34% badge, and the dollars agree with the badge: $10 against $15 is a third off. The 25% figure matches Smallpdf's euro price list, where the same toggle reads -25%. If you are buying in dollars, the saving from committing to a year is bigger than Smallpdf's article tells you.
Does Smallpdf have e-signature?
Yes, through Sign.com. Smallpdf's Sign PDF tool lets you put your own signature on a file, and requesting signatures from other people is handed to Sign.com, a separate product that Smallpdf bundles into its plans. Pro includes an unlimited Sign.com Premium subscription. The Free plan includes a Sign.com free account limited to 2 documents a month.
That arrangement is not a problem in itself. Sign.com is a capable signing tool: its pricing page lists unlimited documents, unlimited signees, unlimited templates and digital sealing on Premium, plus an activity timeline and a certificate of completion. The point for a buyer is what it does to the math. If signing is the reason you pay, you are paying Smallpdf's price for Sign.com's product.
| You want to | Where it happens | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Sign a PDF yourself | Smallpdf Sign PDF | Free with download limits, unlimited on Pro |
| Send a document to other people to sign | Sign.com | 2 documents a month free, unlimited on Premium |
| Get Sign.com Premium through Smallpdf | Smallpdf Pro | $15 a month, or $120 a year |
| Get Sign.com Premium directly | Sign.com | $7 a month billed yearly, $84 a year |
What is the best alternative to Smallpdf?
It depends on which half of Smallpdf you use. For sending documents out to be signed on a monthly bill, SignSend is the simplest swap: $12 a month against Smallpdf Pro's $15, with unlimited documents, unlimited signers and a certificate of completion on every finished file. For signing on a yearly bill, Sign.com Premium bought directly is cheaper than either. For compressing, converting and editing PDFs, stay with a PDF toolkit.
Buyers usually sit in one of four rows here, and the honest answer is different for each.
| What you actually do | The sensible buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Send finished contracts out to be signed, and you want to stop any month | SignSend Pro, $12 a month | $3 a month less than Smallpdf Pro billed monthly, and you are not paying for thirty PDF tools you skip |
| Send documents out to be signed, and you will pay a year up front | Sign.com Premium directly, $84 a year | It is the same Sign.com Premium that Smallpdf Pro includes, for $36 less |
| Compress, convert and OCR PDFs every week | Stay on Smallpdf Pro | The toolkit is the product and $120 a year is fair for it, with signing thrown in |
| Send the same agreement to a list of people in one go | SignSend Business, $29 a month | Bulk send to up to 200 recipients from one upload, with your company name on the signing page |
We would rather send you to the second row than sell you the first row badly. The buyers who do best on SignSend are the ones who want signing that stops the month they stop needing it.
Is Smallpdf Pro worth it?
Smallpdf Pro is worth it if you work with PDFs most days. It unlocks unlimited use of more than 30 tools, unlimited downloads, text editing, OCR, strong compression, AI tools and the mobile app, and it throws in Sign.com Premium. Smallpdf says it has been trusted by 1.7 billion people since 2013, and its iOS app holds a 4.8 rating from 6.9K ratings on the App Store. Those are real strengths.
It is poor value in one specific case: when signatures are the whole job. Then the $120 a year buys a toolkit you do not open plus a signing product you could buy on its own for $84, and on a monthly bill it costs $180 a year against $144 for SignSend Pro. Neither gap is dramatic. Both are the kind of thing a finance team asks about at renewal.
How do I cancel Smallpdf?
Sign in on the Smallpdf website, go to Account settings, open Plan & Billing, click Cancel Subscription, then confirm by clicking Cancel Subscription again. Smallpdf says Pro keeps working until the end of the billing period you already paid for. Cancellations are only available on the website, and subscriptions bought through the App Store or Google Play are cancelled in the store's own settings.
Do not reach for Delete account as a shortcut. Smallpdf's help article says deleting cancels all subscriptions immediately and permanently deletes your files. If there are signed agreements sitting in the account, download them first. Our step by step guide on how to cancel a Smallpdf subscription covers the trial, auto renewal and refunds as well.
| What you click | What Smallpdf says happens |
|---|---|
| Cancel Subscription on a paid plan | Pro stays active until the current billing period ends |
| Cancel Subscription during the trial | Pro features are removed immediately and the trial cannot be resumed |
| Turn off auto renewal | Pro stays active until the period ends, with no further charge |
| Delete account | All subscriptions cancelled at once and files permanently deleted |
What does SignSend cost, and what does it not do?
SignSend Pro is $12 a month, billed month to month, with unlimited documents, unlimited signers, automatic reminders to anybody who has not signed, a full audit trail and a certificate of completion on every finished document. Business is $29 a month and adds bulk send to up to 200 recipients and your company name on the signing page and the certificate.
Being clear about the edges saves everyone time. SignSend takes PDF files up to 20MB and sends one document per request. It places the signature block for you, so the workflow is upload, add signers, send. It does not compress, convert or OCR anything, which is exactly why a PDF toolkit is the better buy if those are your daily jobs.
You can see the whole ladder next to the other vendors on our e-signature pricing comparison. If you are weighing the other PDF editors that sell signing on the side, the same pattern shows up in our pdfFiller alternative and DocHub alternative comparisons.
Features
Why buyers go looking for a Smallpdf alternative
Six things that send people shopping, taken from what Smallpdf and Sign.com publish themselves.
Signing is a second product
Smallpdf's pricing page opens with the line Get both Smallpdf and Sign.com with one subscription, and each plan card carries a Sign.com panel. Sending a document out for signature is Sign.com's job. That means a second brand, a second site and a second set of plan limits inside the subscription you thought was one thing.
The free tier stops at two documents
The Free card on Smallpdf's pricing page reads Sign.com free account limited to 2 documents a month. For somebody who needs a lease, an engagement letter and a contractor agreement signed in the same week, the wall arrives on the third document.
The monthly price is half again the yearly one
On the US pricing page Smallpdf Pro is $15 a month billed monthly and $10 a month billed yearly, charged as $120. The yearly toggle carries a -34% badge. Smallpdf's own app listing matches both figures: $14.99 a month and $119.99 a year.
The bundle costs more than the piece
Sign.com sells its Premium plan on its own at $7 a month billed yearly: unlimited documents, unlimited signees, unlimited templates, digital sealing. That is $84 a year. Smallpdf Pro, which includes the same Sign.com Premium, is $120. A signing-only buyer on the bundle pays $36 a year for PDF tools they do not open.
Teams pay per seat, two seats minimum
Smallpdf's Team plan covers 2 to 19 seats at $12 a seat a month billed monthly or $8 a seat a month billed yearly. The smallest team on the yearly rate is $192 a year. Twenty seats and up moves to Business, which is a custom quote.
Delete means the files go too
Smallpdf's own help article says deleting your account cancels all subscriptions immediately and permanently deletes your files. Cancelling keeps Pro running until the billing period ends. Somebody tidying up on the way out can lose signed paperwork by picking the wrong button.
How it works
Send your first document in three steps
No migration project, no annual commitment, no second product to learn.
01
Upload the PDF
Drag in the document you need signed, up to 20MB. SignSend signs PDFs, so export from Word or Google Docs first.
02
Add your signers
Type in names and email addresses. SignSend places the signature block for you, so there is nothing to position by hand.
03
Send it and watch it come back
Everyone gets an email with a link. Reminders go out automatically to anybody who has not signed, and the finished PDF carries a certificate of completion.

Who it’s for
Who switches, and why
Freelancers and consultants
Proposals and statements of work go out as finished PDFs. The job is two signatures and a record of who signed when, on a bill that can stop in a slow month.
Small law and accounting practices
Engagement letters and authorizations need a defensible audit trail more than they need a compression tool. The certificate of completion comes with Pro.
Landlords and property managers
Leases and renewals come off a template you already trust. Three signatures on the same file in the same week is where a two-a-month free cap stops working.
Teams sending one form to many people
A new policy acknowledgment for every contractor, or a waiver for a whole roster. Business sends one upload to up to 200 recipients without a per seat bill.
FAQ
Smallpdf alternative questions, answered
What is the best Smallpdf alternative for e-signatures?
For sending documents out to be signed on a monthly bill, SignSend Pro at $12 a month is a direct swap for Smallpdf Pro at $15, with unlimited documents and unlimited signers. On a yearly bill, Sign.com Premium bought directly at $84 a year is cheaper than both. For PDF editing and conversion, keep a PDF toolkit.
How much does Smallpdf cost per month?
Smallpdf Pro is $15 a month billed monthly or $10 a month billed yearly, charged as $120. Team is $12 a seat a month billed monthly or $8 a seat billed yearly, for 2 to 19 seats. Smallpdf's App Store listing prices Pro at $14.99 a month and $119.99 a year.
Is Smallpdf e-signature the same as Sign.com?
Requesting signatures is. Smallpdf's pricing page says you get both Smallpdf and Sign.com with one subscription, and each plan card lists the Sign.com access it includes: a free account limited to 2 documents a month on Free, and an unlimited Sign.com Premium subscription on Pro.
How many documents can I sign for free on Smallpdf?
Smallpdf's Free plan includes a Sign.com free account limited to 2 documents a month. Past that you need Smallpdf Pro, which includes Sign.com Premium, or a Sign.com Premium plan on its own.
Is Sign.com cheaper than Smallpdf Pro?
Yes, if signing is all you need and you pay yearly. Sign.com lists Premium at $7 a month billed yearly, which is $84 a year, against $120 a year for Smallpdf Pro. Smallpdf Pro adds the PDF toolkit on top of the same Sign.com Premium.
Why is SignSend a Smallpdf alternative if Sign.com is cheaper per year?
Because not everyone wants to pay a year up front. SignSend Pro is $12 a month with no annual commitment, which is less than Smallpdf Pro's $15 monthly rate. Business adds bulk send to up to 200 recipients at $29 a month, which neither Smallpdf's nor Sign.com's plan cards list.
Does Smallpdf offer refunds?
Smallpdf's help article says it handles refund requests case by case and asks you to contact support with your subscription details. It does not publish a fixed refund window.
What happens to my files if I delete my Smallpdf account?
Smallpdf says deleting your account cancels all subscriptions immediately and permanently deletes your files. Cancelling the subscription instead keeps Pro active until the billing period ends, which leaves time to download anything you need.
Are documents signed on SignSend legally binding in the US?
Electronic signatures are recognized under the federal ESIGN Act and UETA, which most states have adopted. SignSend records who signed, when, and from which IP address, and attaches a certificate of completion to the finished PDF, which is the evidence that matters if anyone disputes it later.
What does SignSend not do?
SignSend takes PDF files up to 20MB and sends one document per request. It places the signature block for you and signs documents that are already finished. It has no compression, conversion or OCR tools, so anyone who needs those every week should keep a PDF toolkit.
